Neha Likes - Everything Digital

My love for food drove me to write this blog after so many months. This feedback for Zomato is pure, honest and not at all biased because I am a person who lives to eat, travel, explore new cuisines, restaurants and everything that life offers.

So, here goes a list of all things that are fantastic about this site:
  • Zomato, no doubt is one of the most sought after name when you have to search about the restaurants, cuisines, prices, menu and reviews. It has an automatic brand recall that the person searching on the website or the mobile app does not go anywhere else except this site when it comes to food.
  • Even when a person searches the name of the restaurant/pub/bakery/cafe, many times the first link on the Google.com is of the Zomato (of-course, the link goes directly to your search query). This means that they allow themselves to be on top of the brand's own website.
  • It offers something for everyone - They have organized their website and app so beautifully that it reminds me of the quote by Steve Jobs on Design - 'Design is not just what it looks like and feels like, Design is how it works'. They have so many clearly classified categories to chose:
Easy navigation, beautiful designs
  • Their creatives are beyond awesome. There is a team of clever minds working on amazing food pictures and innovative copy writing, be it on the website or on Facebook or the famous campaign #FoodPorn on Instagram
  • They are the most updated and when I write this, I actually mean that every new joint is on their site. It is just a search away. And they have most user generated reviews too.
Now coming up to the stuff that I do not like about this site or it can be taken as feedback for improvements:

    Search on Zomato Home Page
  • The home page 'search options' does not hold a 'wow' factor. Why is Chinese there in the list but not other cuisines like Italian/ Mexican etc. It should be consolidated list of all your beautiful categories you have listed on the second scroll of your home

    Categories on Zomato's site
  • The first scroll's footer makes it appear that it is the end of the site. And then you look at the scroll bar to see that the best part of the site is actually in the second scroll.
Zomato - Home Page
  • There should be a section of 'whats new', which should take the user to the page of all the new places in his area
  • The images of the menu of individual restaurant appears very distorted or sometimes not readable on the mobile unless one zoom them.
  • Introduction to badges/loyalty points to reviewers etc. can be made to attract more reviews like TripAdvisor.
While I hope that these must be the common feedback from all the users of Zomato website/app, I would certainly look forward to visiting the site more and more with pepped-up features. Hope the readers of blog do it too :)

Many of us watch MasterChef and for various reasons we love the show. Perhaps this is one such series that even the vegetarians across India watch. Ever wondered why? It is because more than the recipe, the contestants share the innovations possible, the new ingredients, the excitement of the time and many Management lessons.

No, we do not watch it for learning Management. Of course not, but the show comes with handful of them (in the order of how the show runs)-

1.      Be prepared for new challenges – The contestants are taken to different restaurants, different cities where the culture, people and even food habits are new to them. They themselves belong to different places and are surprised every day with a new goal to achieve. It depicts a skill - accept whatever comes your way, go conquer the world.

2.      Teamwork – Many fight, many throw different ideas but it is their teamwork which results in sweet fruit in the end. Most of the times, we have come across that if there is even slightest of politics or ambiguity or even disagreement, your recipe is affected. I have this amazing quote from my mother – Your mood at the time you are cooking, is directly proportional to the taste and appearance of the meal.

3.      Strategizing – The contestants are told the goal of the day and then they have to think through each and every small activity from the dish they would cook, to ingredients they would require, to budgets they are allocated and how would they present. Small time is given but it has to be goal driven. Planning & then executing is the key.

4.      Eye for detail & Creativity – The dishes they churn out is presented with details and an art. The way the contestants pronounce the item is as close to what is visible on the plate. It is neat. They take care of even the smallest of flavors which may cause a taste change in the dish. From hygiene to quantity to the final product, everything is a piece of their beautiful imagination. Very famous quote from Steve Jobs comes to my mind ‘Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn't really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That's because they were able to connect experiences they've had and synthesize new things’.

5.      Crisis Management – What happens when the dish turns out not the way he or she wanted? They have a backup plan. Or they fail and present what is on the table. Again two important things to note down here is always have a Plan B to fall upon. And if time is a constrain and you cannot execute the Plan B, present what is completed with conviction. You never know the task which you are not satisfied with, might interest somebody else. Even if failure is on the back of your mind, go with what you have.

6.      Performance under pressure – Time has always been a constraint and not only for these contestants but even in our daily tasks. Pressure of successful completion, wining in your duties, peer pressure and tough competition will always be there in your job or business. But the way these chefs perform under all these limitations is a big learning for all of us.

7.      Accepting criticism in positive manner – You thought it was your best shot but something happened and hell broke loose on it? These contestants go though it almost every time and one is eliminated on every show. Yet they face it with patience. They take the feedback in positive manner. If it was bad they take the judge’s fury and if it was good (at-least to them) but was not up to the mark, they still listen. Resilience is the key.

There are many other small day to day incidences which life teaches us from these shows such as budgeting, timing, prioritizing, presentation, servicing the end consumer and customer satisfaction. It depends on us how we tune ourselves after watching them.

Summary from the above Management Lessons in a Quote - ‘Life does throw lemon on all of us; we have to be opportunistic to ask for tequila and salt!’

The word lasagne is pronounced as la-saa-nia and it is nothing but flat sheets of Pasta. Nowadays, it has become a trend in metros to make something new at home for parties and Italian food is quite a rage - be it Garlic Bread, Pita Bread, Pizza, Pasta, Risotto (Italian rice cooked in cheese and white sauce), or lasagne, people are open for experiments. And I am surely one of them. I had friends for a party at home last Saturday and the menu was Garlic bread, Focaccia bread, Red Sauce Pasta and Lasagne. It sounds lot of dishes but then I am talking about eleven people.

Lasagne tastes best with white sauce. This is my opinion and also from the experience with more than 50 people eating this dish.  While in different countries, it is served in different ways. For example Maldives includes lot of sea food in the white sauce; Switzerland (a very bad experience) served boiled lasagne sheets with boiled vegetables and some tomato ketchup. I was looking at the dish for 5 minutes and was wondering how to eat it. I had no option but to gulp down the 14 Frank + taxes worth small raw pasta.  Spain serves it in red sauce with lot of pork or beef.

So after the above reviews, here is how I bake it. The recipe and few tips for making it for 10 people –

Ingredients
  1. Lasagne sheets (different companies such as Spigadoro, Baronia)
  2. Onions (finely chopped three medium sized)
  3. Cloves (Not more than 3)
  4. White Flour (3-4 Tablespoons of Maida)
  5. Milk (half litre)
  6. Cream (optional)
  7. Spinach (finely chopped and boiled)
  8. Mushrooms (finely chopped)
  9. Cheese cube (2 cubes)
  10. Butter or oil
  11. Italian seasonings (Oregano and Chili Flakes)
Yes, this is all you need and doesn't it sound simple. Yes, it is very easy and takes maximum one hour to prepare it.

Directions

  • Heat 2-3 tablespoon butter or oil in a pan and add clove and onions to it. Saute them till light brown
  • Turn off the gas and add flour to it and then stir fast to avoid lumps.
  • Saute both of them on medium flame and then again turn off the gas
  • Add milk slowly and stir continuously to avoid lumps
  • Add grated cheese and cream if you want.
  • Stir and then switch on the gas.
  • Stir to avoid the sauce to stick to the bottom of the pan
  • Once the mixture gets heated, take out one cup of the white sauce and keep it aside.
  • To the rest, add spinach and mushroom and stir well
  • Add seasonings and keep it aside.
  • In a separate flat pan, boil lasagne sheets one by one to avoid sticking to each other

How to set it –

In a glass rectangular dish, add some white sauce (one with mushroom and spinach) and spread it across. Lay the boiled lasagne sheet on it. Then add the same sauce on top of sheet then again lay another sheet. Repeat till there are 6 sheets and white sauce between them.
On top of the last sheet, add the white sauce which was kept aside in a cup. Add grated cheese for garnishing. Now your lasagne is ready. Before serving, bake it for 15 minutes at 180 degree in the oven.

Personal Tips:

  1. Adding cloves before onions to the pan makes them saute in clove flavored oil and it is tasty apart from making it digestible for sensitive stomachs
  2. Milk can be full cream if you want it to be rich and creamy or toned for keeping it on lighter side.
  3. By adding cream, you make it even more rich and tasty. Though it is optional.
  4. Finely cut spinach can be boiled in the microwave by adding 1 tablespoon of water to the  spinach and microwaving it for 8 - 10 minutes
  5. You can make it with 6 or 8 sheets. Top 3 should be in the center  one above the other. However the rest can be placed to maintain symmetry in the dish.
  6. Always cut with pizza cutter in a perfect square and serve it with pie-serving spoon with a little bit of chili sauce on it.
